How Chinese Factories Price Parts
Understanding how Chinese factories calculate prices helps buyers negotiate effectively and identify fair quotes. Most factories use this basic formula: Price = Material Cost + Processing Cost + Tooling + Profit Margin.
Material Cost Breakdown
Material typically accounts for 20-40% of part cost. Key factors:
- Raw material price: Chinese domestic steel (Q235, 45#) is among the cheapest globally. Imported materials (P20, H13, stainless 316) cost more.
- Material utilization: How much raw material ends up as chips. A part cut from 100mm round bar that finishes at 80mm diameter has ~36% material waste. Factories factor this in.
- Minimum purchase: Factories buy standard bar stock in 3-6 meter lengths. Small quantities mean higher per-kg material cost.
- Surface treatment material: Plating, anodizing, painting all add material cost. Typically $0.10-1.00/dm² depending on process.
Always specify material grade clearly on drawings. Vague descriptions like "stainless steel" usually default to 201 (cheaper but less corrosion resistant).
Processing Cost
The largest cost component (40-60%). Determined by:
- Machine hourly rate: Varies by machine type: CNC lathe ($20-40/hr), 3-axis mill ($25-50/hr), 5-axis mill ($60-120/hr), grinding ($30-50/hr), EDM ($30-60/hr)
- Cycle time: Actual machining time per part. Complex 3D surfaces take longer than 2D profiles.
- Setup time: Time to program, fixture, and set up the job. For small batches (1-10 pcs), setup dominates cost.
- Number of operations: Each machine change adds cost. Parts that can be completed in one setup cost less.
- Labor rate: Chinese CNC operator labor is approximately $5-10/hr depending on region and skill level.

If a quote is suspiciously low (50% below others), ask why — it might be wrong material grade, loose tolerances, or a factory that will cut corners.
