Why QC Matters for Imported Molds
When importing injection molds from China, the distance and language gap make quality control critical. A mold that fails after 50,000 cycles instead of 500,000 is not just a production problem — it can cost you 3-5x the mold price in lost production time and logistics. A structured QC process before, during, and after manufacturing is essential.
The 3-Stage Inspection Process
Stage 1: Design Review (Before Steel Cutting)
- Review DFM report: Gate location, cooling layout, ejection system
- Check steel selection: Is the specified grade (P20, H13, S136) appropriate for your material and volume?
- Mold flow analysis: Review fill pattern, weld lines, air traps, cooling time prediction
- Request 3D model (.stp or .x_t) for independent verification
- Cooling analysis: Adequate cooling channels? Water flow rate calculated?

Stage 2: In-Process Inspection (During Manufacturing)
- Request weekly progress photos: Machining, electrode, EDM progress, assembly
- Check critical dimensions: Parting line match, insert fit, slide clearance
- Verify heat treatment: Request hardness test results for hardened components
- Check cooling circuits: Flow test results, pressure test (recommend 10 bar minimum)
- Review T1 sample (first trial): Part weight, dimensions, visual quality
Stage 3: Final Inspection (Before Shipment)
- Visual inspection of mold: Rust prevention, surface finish, labeling
- Complete trial: Test mold at customer-specified process parameters
- Measure 20+ sample parts: Critical dimensions per your drawing
- Check mold documentation: CMM report, material certificate, trial report
- Packing inspection: Proper rust protection, palletizing for sea freight
Common Quality Issues and Prevention
- Steel substitution: Factory uses cheaper steel than agreed. Prevention: Require mill certificates for all steel purchases.
- Inadequate cooling: Cooling channels too far from cavity surface (should be 15-20mm). Prevention: Review cooling layout in 3D model.
- Stick marks / poor ejection: Insufficient draft angle or polish direction. Prevention: Review DFM for proper draft angles (1-3 degree minimum).
- Mold plate rust: Poor surface treatment. Prevention: Specify nitriding or rust-proof coating for all plates.
Third-Party vs Self Inspection
For molds over $10,000, third-party inspection companies (e.g., QIMA, Bureau Veritas, SGS) are commonly used. They can visit the factory, witness trials, and issue independent reports. Cost is typically $300-600 per visit. For smaller molds, factory-provided video evidence and detailed photos with scale references are often sufficient.
