Introduction to Mold Surface Finishing

Mold surface finish directly affects the appearance, feel, and function of molded plastic parts. The Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) defines standard finish grades that serve as the universal language between mold makers, designers, and customers.

Surface Finishing Techniques

1. Diamond Polishing (SPI A)

Uses diamond paste of decreasing particle size (6um to 0.25um). Requires minimum 48 HRC steel. Cost: 0-150 per cavity.

2. Paper/Stone Finishing (SPI B-C)

Progressive sanding from 120 to 600-800 grit. Most common approach. Cost: 0-80 per cavity.

3. EDM Surface (SPI D)

EDM leaves characteristic micro-craters. No secondary polishing needed. Improves lubricant retention in forming applications.

4. Chemical Etching

Acid solutions create repeatable textures. Patterns include leather grain, matte, satin. Common for automotive interior parts.

5. Laser Texturing

100% repeatable digital patterns with sub-micron precision. Works on complex 3D surfaces. Cost: 00-500 per cavity.

How to Select the Right Finish

  1. Determine functional requirements: cosmetic, structural, or both
  2. Clear/transparent: SPI A1 or A2 mirror polish
  3. Painted parts: SPI B1-C1 (paint adhesion improves with texture)
  4. Textured surfaces: specify pattern number (e.g., Mold-Tech MT-1010)
  5. Grip surfaces: SPI D1-D2 or chemical etch
  6. Low-friction applications: SPI A3 or better

Higher finish grades cost exponentially more. A1 polish can cost 5-10x more than C1. For most consumer products, B1-C1 provides the best balance.
