Overview of Prototyping Options

China has become a global hub for rapid prototyping, offering competitive pricing and fast turnaround. Most prototypes can be produced in 3-10 business days. Understanding the right process for your stage of product development saves both time and money.

3D Printing Prototyping

SLA (Stereolithography): Resin-based, smooth surface finish, good detail. Best for form-fit prototypes, visual models, and master patterns. Layer thickness 0.05-0.1mm. Cost: $20-100 per part depending on size.

SLS (Selective Laser Sintering): Nylon powder, good strength, no support structures needed. Best for functional prototypes, small batch production. Layer thickness 0.1-0.12mm. Cost: $30-150 per part.

FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling): Filament-based (PLA, ABS, PETG, PC). Lower resolution but lowest cost. Best for large prototypes, jigs and fixtures. Layer thickness 0.1-0.3mm. Cost: $10-50 per part.

MJF (Multi Jet Fusion): HP technology, excellent mechanical properties, fast build speed. Best for production-quality functional prototypes. Cost: $40-200 per part.

Metal 3D Printing (DMLS/SLM): Titanium, aluminum, stainless steel, tool steel. Best for complex metal parts, conformal cooling channels in molds. Cost: $200-1000+ per part.

CNC Prototyping

CNC machining remains the most used prototyping method for metal and plastic parts due to material properties matching production parts exactly.

Vacuum Casting (Silicone Molding)

Urethane casting in silicone molds from a master pattern. Ideal for 10-50 pieces with properties similar to production plastics.
