Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) inspection is the most accurate method for verifying part dimensions and geometric tolerances in manufacturing. CMMs use a probing system to collect discrete points on a part surface and compare them against the CAD model.
The CMM moves a probe along three orthogonal axes (X, Y, Z) to touch specific points on the part surface. The control software records each point position and calculates deviations from the nominal CAD data. Modern CMMs can achieve measurement accuracy of 0.5-2 microns.
CMM software can verify all standard GD&T controls: flatness, straightness, roundness, parallelism, perpendicularity, position, concentricity, profile of a surface, and runout. This is essential for ISO 2768 or ASME Y14.5 compliance.
Aerospace (turbine disks, structural frames), automotive (engine blocks, transmission cases), medical implants (hip stems, knee components), mold & die (cavity verification), and precision machinery.
