Heat Treatment Overview

Heat treatment alters steel microstructure through controlled heating and cooling cycles, changing hardness, strength, toughness, and ductility.

Annealing

Steel is heated above critical temperature (723-910C), held, then cooled very slowly in the furnace.

Normalizing

Similar to annealing but cooled in still air. Faster cooling produces finer grain.

Quenching

Steel heated to austenitizing temperature, then rapidly cooled in water, oil, or polymer.

Tempering

Reheating quenched steel to 150-650C, holding, then cooling. Always done after quenching.

Case Hardening

Hardens surface while keeping core tough. Methods: carburizing, nitriding, induction hardening. Case depth: 0.1-3 mm.
