Mold Shrinkage Correction Guide

Adjusting mold dimensions for material shrinkage

Shrinkage Measurement

Mold trial parts should be measured 24-48 hours after molding (post-shrinkage continues for up to 24 hours). Measure at least 10 samples for statistical validity.

Correction Process

  1. Measure actual part dimensions
  2. Calculate actual shrinkage: (Mold dimension - Part dimension)/Mold dimension
  3. Compare to material data sheet values
  4. Adjust process parameters (hold pressure, cooling time) if deviation is small
  5. Apply steel-safe modifications if deviation is large

Common Correction Methods

For undersized parts: increase cavity dimensions via welding + re-cut, or use steel-safe inserts. For oversized parts: weld cavity and re-cut undersized.
