Biocompatible Materials for Medical Injection Molding

China Manufacturing Guide

Biocompatible Materials

Biocompatible materials are essential for medical devices that contact human tissue or bodily fluids. Chinese material suppliers increasingly offer USP Class VI and ISO 10993 compliant materials. Understanding material certification is critical for regulatory approval.

Common Biocompatible Materials in China

Most commonly used: medical-grade PC (polycarbonate), PC-ABS, PP (polypropylene), PE (polyethylene), PA (nylon), PEEK, and liquid silicone rubber (LSR). Chinese suppliers typically use international brands (Sabic, Covestro, BASF) for medical-grade materials, though domestic alternatives are emerging. PVC-free alternatives are now standard in Chinese medical manufacturing.

Verifying Material Compliance

Request: material certificate from the resin supplier showing USP Class VI or ISO 10993 test results. Verify the tests cover: cytotoxicity, sensitization, irritation, acute systemic toxicity, subacute toxicity, and implantation. Test reports should be from ISO 17025 accredited laboratories. Biological evaluation per ISO 10993-1 risk assessment.

Buyer's Tip: A common problem: the factory claims to use medical-grade material but the material certificate is for the resin supplier's standard grade, not the medical-grade variant. Verify the exact grade number against the supplier catalog. Standard PC and medical-grade PC may look identical but have different additive packages.
What This Means for Your Project: Biocompatible molding adds 20-40% to material cost but is non-negotiable for medical devices. Chinese medical molders are increasingly capable, but material traceability documentation must be verified during your audit. Budget for 3-6 months of material qualification testing.
