CNC Turning Guide

CNC turning is a fundamental machining process widely available across China's manufacturing clusters. This guide covers turning capabilities, quality standards, and sourcing strategies for precision turned parts.

Machine Capabilities

Common machine types: 2-axis lathes (basic turning), 3-axis lathes with live tooling (milling + turning), Swiss-style lathes (Citizen, Star, Tsugami) for small precision parts, and multi-spindle lathes for high volume. Chinese factories primarily use domestic machine tools (DMTG, Qinchuan) or Taiwan brands (Tongtai, Victor Taichung). Premium factories use Japanese/Swiss machines.

Materials

Standard: aluminum (6061, 7075), brass, steel (carbon, alloy, stainless 303/304/316), plastics (POM, nylon, PTFE, PEEK). Chinese workshops stock these materials but may charge for minimum quantity purchases. Lead times depend on material availability. Stainless steel and exotic alloys typically add 1-2 weeks for material procurement.

Tolerance Capabilities

Standard turning tolerance: +/- 0.05mm. Precision turning: +/- 0.01mm (requires premium machines and CMM inspection). Swiss turning: +/- 0.005mm possible for diameters under 20mm. Specify tolerances clearly on your drawing - default "standard" tolerances in China (GB/T 1804-m) are often looser than ISO 2768-m.

Buyer's Tip: The biggest quality risk in Chinese CNC turning is inconsistent material hardness. A batch of 7075 aluminum that varies by 5 HB can cause dimensional drift of 0.02mm. Include material hardness verification in your incoming inspection. Also: many Chinese turning shops still use coolant-based cutting rather than MQL (minimum quantity lubrication), which can affect surface finish on aluminum.
What This Means for Your Project: CNC turning in China offers 40-60% cost savings vs US/European shops. For precision parts under 25mm diameter, Swiss turning is the most cost-effective process. For larger parts above 100mm diameter, consider whether the part can be redesigned for smaller stock to reduce material waste. Minimum order quantities for CNC turning typically start at 100-500 pieces.
