China Manufacturing Guide

A robust quality management system (QMS) is essential for consistent quality in injection molding. Understanding how Chinese factories implement QMS helps you assess supplier capability and build your quality assurance program.
Essential QMS elements: (1) Documented procedures for all critical processes, (2) Training records for all operators, (3) Calibration system for inspection equipment, (4) Non-conformance and corrective action process, (5) Supplier qualification program for raw materials, (6) Internal audit program, (7) Management review process. A factory with a well-implemented QMS will have all seven elements working, not just documented.
Advanced Chinese factories implement: Statistical Process Control (SPC) for critical dimensions, First Article Inspection (FAI) for each production run, In-process inspection at defined intervals (every 50-200 parts), Last-off inspection to confirm mold condition after run, and Layered Process Audits (LPA) for automotive compliance. Ask to see their process control documentation during your audit.
Documentation is often the weakest area in Chinese factories. Common issues: incomplete or inconsistent records, untraceable batch numbers, no root cause analysis on corrective actions, and outdated procedures. Evaluate documentation quality thoroughly during audits. If documentation is poor, process control is likely poor even if the factory holds ISO 9001.
