Proper maintenance is the single most important factor in stamping quality and tool life. A well-maintained die produces 2-5× more parts between overhauls.

Wear Detection
- Burr height >0.1mm: Cutting edges need sharpening
- Scoring on part: Galling or pick-up on die surface
- Dull spots on punch: Shiny areas indicate wear
- Burn marks: Excessive friction or poor lubrication
- Dimensions shifting >30% of tolerance: Worn guides or punches
Punch Sharpening Guidelines
- Remove only 0.05-0.15mm per cycle — more wastes tool life
- Grind perpendicular to cutting motion with A46-J46 aluminum oxide wheel
- Target Ra 0.2-0.4µm surface finish
- D2 steel: 8-12 sharpening cycles max. Carbide: 3-5 cycles.

Storage
Clean and apply rust preventive before storage. Store dies closed to protect cutting edges. Maintain 18-26°C and <60% humidity. Mark die number, last maintenance date, and revision level on a durable tag.
